Wool Fibres and silk cloth are exciting and luxurious to work with. With minimal equipment and the most basic skills a sumptuous fine cloth can be created. Explore colour and texture with an element of spontaneity. We will learn to lay the finest layers of wool fibre and the technique of wool lamination, where wool is used to manipulate fine silks. The resulting cloth is a delight to stitch.


Day 1 Morning
The magic of felt; learn to lay the finest of layers of merino wool
Make a pre-felt that can be used in your design
Plan a larger piece
Wet out, gently pressing the water through the layers
Add texture with silk fibres and fragments of silk fabrics
Add shape with pre-felts. Add lines with drawn wool
Control the edges and complete the felting process.
  Wool lamination. Wool fibres used to manipulate fine fabrics.
Day 2
Discuss the possibilities for using the felts
Choose to stitch or make more felts
Ideas for stitch and applique, by hand or machine
Treatment of edges and methods of joining felts

Inspiration pictures for colour reference.
1-2 metres bubble wrap, 50-75cm wide; small bubbles, no holes.
2 towels, medium to large size.
Plastic jug/bowl or 4 litre ice cream tub. Sponge or j cloth
Water spray bottle, (plants, or recycled kitchen)
Scissors, sewing kit, tape measure
Notebook / camera
Wools*: merino, 21 micron or less* approx. 100 grams
Half metre and small off cuts assorted gauzy, loosely woven NATURAL silk or cotton cloth,
Cheesecloth, chiffon, recycled sari.
Any favourite embellishments, small shells, beads etc.
*Fibres as available, silk, bamboo, banana, novelty knitting yarns* can be supplied by Barbara
Specialist equipment supplied by Barbara, no added cost:
Foam rollers, olive soap, nets, water dispensers.

A large range of coloured Merino wool fibre. Approx  £5, depending on how much you use.
Hand dyed chiffon, please contact Barbara with colour preference. Half metre £5

Barbara WeeksBarbara Weeks is an international textiles tutor living in Kimpton, Herts. She has taught C&G stitched textiles for over 25 years, with many student successes at the Festival of Quilts. She regularly exhibits with the Contemporary Quilt group of the Quilters Guild.
She is also passionate about making Felt and is the coordinator for the IFA in Beds, Bucks, Herts & Berks. You can find her at the Felt makers tent at Living Crafts at Hatfield House in May.
