Summary

For resident students who want to arrive on Friday (includes Friday dinner, bed and breakfast).This course aims to build designs using contrasting surfaces and to explore a range of stitches to implement them. It is suitable for those wishing to make a unique and personal textile and who would like some help to achieve this. Beginners and the more advanced are both welcome.

Description

A simple accessible design process is an integral element of the course and will give some exciting imagery to develop into a stitched textile.
Techniques will include preparing design papers with acrylic paints and inks, working with cut paper to build designs. Composition will consider shape, contrast, and line.
We will explore a range of stitch techniques to make surfaces that will enhance designs made.
 

Please bring with you

A3 cartridge paper
acrylic paint, two colours plus black and white. You may bring coloured inks if you wish.
Brushes, palette, water pot, kitchen paper or baby wipes for cleaning up.
PVA glue plus applicator
Fabrics and threads to match colours of paint chosen,
a small piece of fine cotton or muslin as backing for stitch.
A sewing kit to include a range of needle sizes.
 
I will bring extra paper for students to purchase, cost £1, and fabrics and threads to supplement those that students bring.(no cost for these)

Janet Edmonds is a freelance textile artist, author of several books and experienced tutor, exhibiting and delivering courses to adults nationally and internationally. She has taught City & Guilds courses for 25 years at various centres including Missenden Abbey and also runs advanced workshops. She was awarded the Medal for Excellence and the Broderers Prize in 2016. She is a member of the Chiltern Embroidery and Textile Group, Textile Study Group and Buckinghamshire Craft Guild.
