Description
Delight in discovering how to mix beautiful mineral pigments into egg tempera and then paint on handmade gesso panels following centuries of tried and tested techniques. As your tutor I will take you through each step and guide you to make a painting unique to you and your chosen subject matter. With historic references you will learn about composition, light and form by building up both subtle and vibrant paint surfaces with layers of glazing and optical mixes with brushstrokes of egg tempera. Not only will you take home a painting completed on this inspiring course but knowledge of a beautiful technique that has been practised for centuries.
Please bring with you
Most important:
6 Fresh as possible free range farmhouse eggs
Sketching materials.
Watercolour brushes if you wish.
Suitable clothing and apron.
Subject matter you wish to paint whether still life objects, flowers, fruit, shells, etc. Or images from your imagination, sketches of photographic images, or the views at Missenden Abbey. I find It creates a great atmosphere and fun in the studio as everyone works on different imagery to create their paintings.
Maz will provide you with a kit comprised of a handmade true gesso panel, a set of 12 mineral pigments and practice panel which are included in the course fee. Also provided is equipment to be used during the course such as yin yang ceramic palettes, rigger brushes etc

Maz Jackson is an award-winning artist who exhibits her unique egg tempera paintings worldwide including the Royal Academy and the Mall Galleries London as well as across Europe, Japan, Mexico, Canada and USA. She has represented the UK at Florence, Palermo, Quebec and Venice and Biennale and at Salon des Independants Grand Palais Paris.
A much respected and experienced tutor, Maz has worked in colleges, schools and adult education giving short courses and as a mentor. She has worked as an adviser and practitioner for the BBC on the fifteenth century traditions of egg tempera. She delights in her work and enjoys inspiring and passing on this historic technique and making it accessible to all.
