Summary
In the middle of the 12th century, England and Normandy were ripped apart by civil war as King Stephen and Empress Matilda battled for supremacy. There was a widespread breakdown of law and order. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle 'men said openly that Christ and His saints slept'. This chaotic period has become known as 'The Anarchy'. Meet the characters involved, discover the causes of the crisis, and follow the ups and downs of the struggle as it is played out to its resolution.
