Fin-de-Siecle: art, culture, and society in transition
Tutor: Richard StoneCourse Code: 1222-03

Towards the close of the 19th century, Europe underwent a period of cultural transformation. Paris in particular was a place of political upheaval. In Berlin, Munich, and Vienna, a new wave of artists rejected academic conservatism and struck out on their own. This course will survey the cultural phenomenon we now label Fin-de-Siecle and consider how artists captured and mirrored this exciting and turbulent era.

After setting the political, social and artistic scene, the course will explore:
- The Vienna Secession and Vienna Workshop
- Art movements of the period including: Symbolism; Decadence; Art Nouveau; and, Aestheticism
- The impact of Japanese art
- The relationship between fine and applied art; and, between art and architecture
- Cafe society and the emergence of cabaret
- The life and work of Aubrey Beardsley; James Abbot McNeill Whistler, Gustav Klimt; Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec; and, others
- Works by influential artists including: Degas; Manet; Rennie Mackintosh; Van Gogh, and others
- The rise and impact of Anarchism, Socialism, and activism in the cause of women’s suffrage
