Chinese Brush Painting: Studying Liu Jiyou (Animals)

Summary
Through face to face instruction and with traditional demonstrations, this course will introduce the work of the artist Liu Jiyou (1918 to 1983), a native of Tianjin and an outstanding Chinese painter. Known as the "Rembrandt and Michelangelo of the East", Liu Jiyou is an accomplished master of animal painting and figure painting in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese art. In this workshop, through the study and research of Liu Jiyou's works, we will understand and master the essence of this master of Chinese painting.
Description
Mr. Liu Jiyou is one of the few modern Chinese painters who can paint white, heavy colour, small and large freehand. His subject matter is also very comprehensive: in addition to people and animal paintings, he was also proficient at flowers, birds, and landscapes. In particular, his achievements in figure paintings and freehand animal paintings are the most prominent. He adheres to the tradition of family learning, lifelong diligence, with diligent and pragmatic professionalism, a rigorous and meticulous work attitude, and constant innovation. Tens of thousands of his works are based on unique brush and ink, exquisite skills, philosophical composition, and his artistic style is full of a new spirit of the times.
Please bring with you
Large, medium and small Chinese brushes (at least one of each)
A Bottle of Chinese Ink
A box of Chinese colour (or, Gamboge, Indigo, Burnt Sienna, Vermillion Carmine, Rouge tint and White colours,
each one PCS)
Some rice paper (raw Xuan paper)
Felt or old blanket (about 1m2)
2 or 3 white dishes to be used as palettes

The tutor will have some materials available for purchase if required:
Chinese colour: each tube of 12ml for £1; a set of 12 colours for £8.00;
Chinese brushes, in different sizes from £2 - £15;
Suitable papers for the course (E.G. Rice paper (70cm x 135cm) for £1.50))

William Cai

William has taught and worked at the British Museum, the Westminster Library, the National Gallery, the Princes Foundation Art School, and many other art associations including painting and engraving seals at the V&A.
He is very experienced at Chinese landscape paintings, flower and bird paintings, meticulous paintings, and freehand paintings, especially in traditional styles.
He believes that doing Chinese painting and calligraphy can make people happy. In the process of painting, you can cultivate your body and mind.
