Jane will start by talking you through her own design process and will then illustrate the basic skills of designing a motif from scratch. Using a visual inspiration such as a postcard or image, participants will then work on creating their own crochet motif that could subsequently be turned into a larger project.
By way of introducing the subject of designing Jane will talk participants through her own crochet journey and show how her design work has come to fruition via sampling and experimentation. Jane will bring examples of her own work to show.
During the next stage of the workshop Jane will talk through the basics of crochet design when working in the round. This will involve some simple maths and calculations, but is nothing too strenuous!
Once participants have got the basic info they will be shown how to work a crochet motif in the round that echoes their own inspiration, be that a postcard, a photograph or an image found on line.
During the final part of the workshop participants will set about turning their crochet into a ‘proper’ motif, which could be used as part of a larger project.
Participants will learn:
How to calculate stitch counts and crochet tension.
How to create a uniform motif in the round.
How to add corners and details such as bobbles, puffs and beads.
How to choose the correct combination of stitches to create desired shapes.
Jane will also talk about how to choose colours and how to decide on joining techniques.
Please bring with you
Inspirational Image – this could be a postcard, a tessellating pattern, a photograph etc. But it needs to be something that inspires you. Try to steer away from abstract images – you need to bring something that has a clear message!
Oddments of yarn from your stash in DK weights. This needs to be enough yarn to complete your sampling and should reflect the colours in your inspirational image or from another colour source that you like. Jane will bring along lots of oddments too for you to add into your project if you wish.

I am a crochet and hand knit designer/maker working hard to expand the popular notion of crochet and edge it away from the idea that it is a craft representative of an older, ‘Granny’, generation. My goal is to produce projects for the home interior that are ground-breaking in design and technique, but are also within the reach financially and technically of the world’s crafters to reproduce at home. I believe in the importance of teaching and passing on knowledge, so I also tutor workshops, give demonstrations and inspirational talks and exhibit my work, however the majority of my time is spent designing and making high quality Crochet Along (CAL) projects.
