Knitting with Colour - How to Master the Fairisle Technique
Tutor: Jane CrowfootCourse Code: 3218-06

Summary

The Fairisle technique originates from the Shetland Isles and Scandinavian Countries, such as Norway. Fairisle is a knitting technique where yarns are carried across the reverse side of the work to create a 2 layered fabric. Traditional Fairisle patterns use 2 yarn stands, which create beautifully colourful patterns in knitted fabrics. Fairisle is currently incredibly popular and there are many new and exciting patterns on the market, so this is definitely a technique you want to add to your hand knitting repertoire.

Description

This course will show you how to work the stranding and weaving techniques needed to create fairisle patterns. We will work in the round using the one handed and two handed methods and the fabulous method of steeking (where you cut your tubular knitting to create a flat piece) will also be shown.

The Fairisle method is a really great technique if you are interested in playing with colour. Over the course of this workshop we will make some colour palette cards and work on re-colouring some knitted swatches so that you can see how colour choices affect the look of a design. Jane will also show you how to create your own charts on an Excel Spreadsheet or on paper.

Jane Crowfoot

Jane CrowfootI am a crochet and hand knit designer/maker working hard to expand the popular notion of crochet and edge it away from the idea that it is a craft representative of an older, ‘Granny’, generation. My goal is to produce projects for the home interior that are ground-breaking in design and technique, but are also within the reach financially and technically of the world’s crafters to reproduce at home. I believe in the importance of teaching and passing on knowledge, so I also tutor workshops, give demonstrations and inspirational talks and exhibit my work, however the majority of my time is spent designing and making high quality Crochet Along (CAL) projects.
